The Mama na Mazingira women's group in Kakamega County transformed a waste disposal problem into a thriving enterprise. With a NETFUND grant of KES 500,000, they established a plastic waste collection and recycling centre that now employs 30 women and keeps over 10 tonnes of plastic out of landfills each month.
The group collects plastic waste from households and businesses, processes it into recyclable materials, and supplies it to manufacturers. In addition to environmental benefits, the project has improved household incomes and empowered women economically.
